FORMER head of Gauteng police crime intelligence and Mpumalanga police commissioner Afrika Khumalo, who died last week, will be buried on Saturday.

Khumalo, 53, who was born in Thembisa, joined the exodus of young people who went to exile after the 1976 students uprising.

He became an ANC intelligence operative while in exile at different African countries.

According to family spokesperson Derrick Mangadi, Khumalo was tasked with the responsibility of delivering former Vlakplaas commander Dirk Coetzee to the ANC in London undetected.

The Vlakplaas unit was a hit squad formed to execute freedom fighters in the 1980s. "He carried that mission with distinction," said Mangadi.

When he returned from exile, he was deployed in the PWV region where he was responsible for the formation of self defence units to protect communities against attacks.

"He helped expose what became known as the Third Force, that was behind most of the attacks to create tension between residents and hostel dwellers," said Mangadi.

When he was appointed (commissioner) in Mpumalanga, he developed a policing model called "Afrika concept", which integrated police, traffic officers and security officers into one unit.

Mangadi said the project was able to reduce hijacking on the N4.

Khumalo is survived by two wives and four children.

The funeral service will be held at his home, 22 Kruger Road, Midrand, at 9am. The cortege will leave for the cemetery at 1pm.

Comm Afrika Khumalo played a prominent role in the Glen Agliotti corruption investigation against Jackie Selebi!

Pity he did not have his day in court!
