Community shocked by neighbours' cop chase

20 August 2010, 12:24

A man involved in an armed robbery at a Randfontein home was shot dead during a shoot-out with police on Friday, Gauteng police said.

Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said three armed men broke into a home on a plot in Randfontein around 3am, tied up the family who were asleep inside and fled with their television, DVD player, computer and a vehicle.

The matter was reported to the police who later spotted the vehicle along Main Reef road. The police chased the men who drove into a cul-de-sac and began shooting at the police.

The police returned fire and the vehicle crashed into a field on the side of the road. One of the three men was shot and died on the scene. The other two got away.

On further investigation police found that the two who escaped were Mozambican nationals - their neighbours were surprised that they were involved in criminal activity.

Investigations were continuing. - Sapa
